Mariscos 4 Vientos

Hey my people – I been on the food blog tip lately, and today I present a good spot for all you marisco lovers. Mariscos 4 Vientos is a food establishment located on the Eastside. This spot is interesting mainly because there are about five, 4 Vientos locations within  blocks of each other. Why? I am not sure, but I am guessing it is because the crowds of people that go get their marisco fix daily.

Turn in your “broken” guns

The City of Los Angeles is having their Annual Gun Buyback next weekend. If you turn in handguns, shotguns, or rifles you can get $100 in either a Ralph’s or Visa gift cards. Or if you turn in any assault weapon you will receive $200 in gift cards. Now I say “broken” myself because with this crazy world we live in and the way it is becoming, you might want to keep working weapons in a safe place for protection…Now, that’s just my opinion. Viva La Revolution, lol!

Will there still be guns on the streets? Most likely yes, but if you want to get rid of something that doesn’t work, then why not? Whether it’s a gimmick or not, we don’t know, judge for yourself. No questions asked.

Guelaguetza Oaxacan Resturant

The Guelaguetza (from the zapotec word “guendalizaa”) between the villages in Oaxaca means “mutual help” or “Shared Offering”

I first went to this spot last year,  my homie knew that I really liked mole, so he recommended Guelaguetza because he said the mole there was really good. I am used to more pipian style mole because it is spicier, so I wasn’t sure how I would like a sweeter Oaxacan style mole. To my surprise the mole, and everything else was delicious.

Eastside Artist Profile: Sand Oner

The sexy doll-like characters Sand One paints have been popping up all over the Eastside with attitude and fresh charisma. This girl knows what she wants and is doing it by painting her Sand Chicks wherever she can. I caught up with Sand One at Primera Taza in Boyle Heights to see what this native Eastsider was all about.

LA Gang Tours

gangtagsPhoto via Flickr

I’ve been on many tours in the Los Angeles area most of them have been usually run by the Los Angeles Conservancy. I usually expect people my age to think it is lame or cheesy to go on a tour, but I figure I get to learn new facts and history regarding my own city. The majority of the things I’ve learned on these tours most people who grew up in Los Angeles don’t even know or bother to know. I take it as an educational experience in our own backyard.

Slanguage Re-cap on “Dislexicon”

dub1

Thank you to those that were able to make it to ” Dislexicon” this past Thursday @ MOCA. Our little video turned out okay despite the fact it was homemade stilo and we only had a two week period.

Raul Vasquez and Karla Diaz appear in our movie as random characters. They came out and performed spoken word on stage immediately after the movie.

The movie is old history of Wilmington California as well as street history with an art twist check it out.

Make up your mind people!

I find it funny whenever I see a converted Wienerschnitzel location because no matter what they do to it it will always look like a Wienerschnitzel.

This old Wienerschnitzel location in Long Beach has been a couple different businesses.  I guess the last one was  a Mexican resturant which did not last long  either I wonder why?

Juanita’s Foods says it all

juanita

There is nothing like bowl of homemade menudo, but even though Juanita’s Menudo is in a can, it still is one of the best and oldest canned menudo companies around.

The menudo factory has been located in Wilmington Ca for over 60 years.  Founder George De La Torre Jr who  recently passed away this year managed to keep the company a family business. You got to love the company logo as well ” Life without Mexican Food is No Life At All”.

History of Juanita’s Menudo

The company also makes  other products  I did not know they had here is a list of Juanita’s other products.

List of recipes

They did have a bit of controversy in 1987 when someone claimed they found something unwanted in the menudo which at the end was false read story here

Stock up on the menudo now because we always hear about that big earthquake we are expecting you can’t be left hungry!

Peace

Doña Junta

Sorry to my vegetarian friends =)

The Legendary Belmont Tunnel

belmont3belmont11

Special Art show coming up this weekend.

A tribute to the now  gone Belmont Tunnel graffiti yard. This show features art by some of the first generation of Los Angeles graffiti writers.

The Belmont tunnel was the Toluca substation for the Pacific Electric Railway that ran in and around downtown LA starting in the 1920’s. It was left abandoned around the 1950’s when freeways and more cars started popping up. ( I guess they did not  think we would need such train now huh!) Anyhow it was left alone and abandoned for over 30 year’s until the mid 1980’s when the graffiti/bombing era was coming up. It got noticed by writers as a potential place to do art. The rest is train and graffiti history it still holds a special place to many of these talented artists, and others who hung out and  grew up around the area. The land was bought out and torn a few years back to make way to some boring apartment buildings lol.
