Did you wake up one day and realized that you weren’t the most valuable living being on the planet? No, neither have I, but I am making a real effort at getting there.

Maybe you can’t change the world, but you can change a piece of it for at least twenty minutes and if you changed twenty minutes and another person changed twenty minutes, possibly all of you together could have an impact on someone’s day.

If you believe in that kind of concept and you think patchouli smells good here’s a list of your things to do.

Your Stuff to DO!!!

Of course you could go to yet another happy hour (hell it’s going to be vegetarian, vegetarian are good people), another one of “my friend’s” band or even a circle jerk art event. Remember when the art editor of that major paper had a solo show in Chinatown and his paper picked that very horrible show as a pick? Fabulous times. Yeah those are all fabulous times.

But say you went to Catholic school you managed to make it through with no one touching you in a special place. Sister Theresa told you that your life should be one of service, you should be nice to people and the IRA is truly getting a bad rap.

Maybe you’re not Catholic anymore (except during emergencies, you got your Rosary blessed by the pope, I mean they can’t just be beads, it was the pope), maybe you’re not so nice, but that service part was ok and you know, Northern Ireland does belong to Ireland.

Cheech Marin discusses his art collection

The first time I saw paintings from Cheech Marins collection was in April of last year at the Pico House. Up until that point I had never seen a collection of art that not only represented what I saw and recognized in my daily life, but it also made me appreciate and be proud of my culture and heritage.

Los Angelinos/Chicanos of L.A. : Selections from the Cheech Marin Collection features some of the best pieces in his collection and is now on display for the public at Los Angeles County Museum of County Art. To coincide with the exhibit, Marin and UCLA Professor and LACMA adjunct curator Chon Noriega participated in a discussion yesterday about his collection and the place Chicano art has now and in history.

My Sunday at the BEA

Last weekend was the Book Expo America, the book publishing world’s big annual convention where booksellers and librarians get to hobnob with authors and celebrities. It comes every four years or so to Los Angeles and for the second time, I was able to score a free ticket, yay! The perks of attending the convention are the free books, the author signings and the so-called parties. If standing in line for an hour to get Garrison Keillor’s autograph sounds like a good time to you, the BEA just might be your thing. Personally, I can do without the James Pattersons and Dean Koontz of the literary world and I had no inclination to listen to Anderson Cooper blabber on, so my quest was to search out the hidden booths of indie publishers, while trying to stay clear of the Harlequin Romance aisle. I scored a few good books along with some cool Marcel Dzama trading cards (above) from Mc Sweeney’s and a nice Bookforum tote bag.

Más Éxitos @ The Verdugo Bar

Being that there’s been so much drama-for-your-mama on this blog lately I thought I would post something that might cheer some of us up. A friend of mine, with a few friends of his own, has just started this event at the Verdugo bar with music, as he puts it, “belongs in the neighborhood.” The Verdugo bar is in Glassell park. I’ll be there. Enjoy.

There’s been lots of buzz about the upcoming show, Vexing: Female Voices from East L.A. Punk at The Claremont Museum of Art. Much like the misconceptions of the skateboarding scene, there’s many who don’t realize the involvement and contributions of Eastside folks to the history of Los Angeles punk. From the early days of The Bags and The Brat to current groups like Union 13 and Resistant Culture, punk is alive and well in the streets East of the River.

Ramon Ayala this Sunday!

The last time I visited Fiesta Broadway, I told myself I would never go back to this vile, commercial, and utterly contemptible event. It’s basically an Advertisement Circus surrounded by a few musical acts in various stages so you have to walk the gamut of corpo-sponsored suggestions. Trust me, the whole event sucks. Yes, it really does; this is supposed to be a Cinco de Mayo event but the fuckers don’t even offer alcohol, and if you happen to look Latino, don’t bother trying to go to the Broadway Bar, it’ll be closed for a “private function”. (Or bring along a gaggle of your gabacho friends, things might look a lot better then!) So yeah, under no circumstance should you go to the Fiesta Broadway this weekend.

In an utterly reproachable and wicked maneuvering by the Fiesta organizers, knowing full well that my disdain for their crap festival would cut their attendance records by nearly half (give or take a few thousand), they went and scoured my website to find a weakness. The bastards figured out that I’m a die hard fan of Ramon Ayala, a performer whose tickets cost over $100 the last time I wanted to see him. And now they’ve gone and added him to the lineup for this whole crappy venture: yes, Ramon Ayala, the King of the Accordion, will be playing for free at the crappy Fiesta Broadway this Sunday, April 27th! And to fuck shit up even more, the website doesn’t list when or at what stage he will be playing, what an outrage!

Fiesta Broadway Organizers: you suck. Ramon Ayala fans, I’ll see you there. LAEastside readers that want to meet up, I’ll be the Chicano Looking Vato with a twinge of contempt on the brow. Don’t worry, I’ll be easy to spot!
