Multiple sightings of Zapatas horse dressed to the nines in Lincoln Park. 100 years riding and still going strong!
Since Zapata’s horse magically escaped when Zapata was assassinated in Chinameca, Morelia in 1919, witnesses have announced sightings of this legendary horse throughout Mexico. Recent sightings have occurred this morning in Lincoln Heights, just before the Mexican Centennial and Bicentennial Celebrations.

Low End Theory at the Airliner
“What part of town is this? This is Lincoln Heights”
There’s been an under-the-radar, beat-thumping musical revolution going on right here in Lincoln Heights. More specifically, it’s been happening at The Airliner, a popular music venue on North Broadway. It’s where a collective of DJs, who favor beats over vocals, has been putting together shows for the past few years under the banner of “Low End Theory.”
As a frequent listener to NPR, I got a thrill out of them mentioning Lincoln Heights in a recent piece they put together about Flying Lotus, a Low End Theory DJ. Here’s an excerpt:
Ellison began creating new-school hip-hop in his bedroom. For years, he traded tracks with other budding DJs and played music in nightclub parking lots. Then the scene got organized, at a club in L.A.’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood.
“Eventually, there was this party started called Low End Theory, which was geared toward this sound,” he says. “It was more of a producer’s lounge, basically. If you got talent and you got tracks and you hang out enough at Low End Theory, eventually someone will hear something and you can do something.”

Flying Lotus: ‘Beat Music’ And The Coltrane Family Tradition
It’s almost payday. Some dead vato will be remembered this weekend and the people need their supplies to help in the celebration. Why not make a bit of extra cash in the process? The original clock was destroyed a few years ago by a film production company during late night filming at a nearby club, The Airliner. Once local neighbors and activists heard about the incident, calls and queries were made to determine when and how the clock would be repaired. Despite the attention, neither the production company, The Airliner or the Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce would offer up much information on how and if, the clock would ever be replaced.
Well, lo and behold just a few weeks ago, a new clock was installed and while it isn’t the original (the base is new, not sure about the clock face) and is now facing a different direction, it’s not a bad replacement.
A re-dedication ceremony will be held tomorrow, Thursday, March 25 from 10am-11am at the new clock, 2419 N Broadway. Event sponsored by The Lincoln Heights B.I.D.-Business Improvement District and Councilman Ed Reyes. Local celebrity and former Los Angeles Dodger Bobby Castillo will be in attendance.

I don’t know why I care. It actually makes me look bad, a so-called vegetarian succumbing to eating ground up shrimp powder? I mean, why not just go for some dolphin or tuna or shark or lobster instead of the roach of the sea? Cuz I’m an idiot, that’s why.
Yet here I am once again excitedly reminding you that during these few weeks of cuaresma you might consider trying that odd and irrelevant plate of Tortas de Camaron, a dish that will disappear for another year once the zombie Jesus squirms his way out of that tomb. It’s a strange seasonal option: the dish consists of tortas (or tortitas) which are fried shrimp-powder infused egg batter, topped with nopalitos and doused with a red chile sauce. Its the poor persons way of not eating land animals as an act of sacrifice (oh please!) meant to appease some Catholic tradition or other. I used to know, now I don’t care. It’s just a time of year with much more food options at Mexican restaurants for vegetarians. And bad vegetarians as well.
There’s something satisfying about the simplicity of this plate, its humble origins, and the pleasing contrast of textures. It just works.
