Women’s Job & Resource Fair
From the press release:
Take advantage of opportunities this summer to start a new career. On Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the City of Los Angeles’ Human Services Department, the office of the Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, City Council President Eric Garcetti’s Council District 13 and the L.A. Derby Dolls will host a free job fair for women at the home of the Derby Dolls – the Doll Factory (1910 Temple St., 90026).
The free community fair will include job placement assistance, opportunities for green jobs and unexplored avenues for women (such as local trade unions), as well as career training for positions in which employers are currently seeking candidates.
In addition, as part of the Economic Stimulus Package, the City of Los Angeles has received funds for improvement of infrastructure to the city. This has created numerous job opportunities within the city of Los Angeles. The goal of the Free Women’s Job Fair is to help interested women get connected, trained and ready for these jobs.
For any women currently unemployed or looking for a new career, join these community organizations on August 22nd at the Doll Factory for workshops and to meet employers, recruiters and trainers that want to see the women of Los Angeles succeed
Teocintli is closing down
This is one post I thought I would never have to write and as much as I hate to write it, it’s the way things are as Teocintli is closing its doors. After four years of being a community space for local artist to have a place to get their start and offering great merchandise. I know that the kids from Roosevelt will miss the place just as much as everyone else. However this is just another bump in the road. Talking to Nico about the future of the place, he said that even though they’re closing down their doors, the heart and spirit of Teocintli is still going to be around. He me ruined that now they won’t be confined to a store front and be able to conti ue to grow by taking that very spirit that helped them unite the community to other spots that needs it. They’re still going to be having workshops and selling their unique brand of goods all over the Eastside so don’t count them out. With that being said they’re in there last week and are having an everything must go sale. Stop by for the first time or the last time and check it the spot. It’s going to be sorely missed, but they’ll still be around.
Language Barriers
Two signs I have come across that gave me a good chuckle.
El Verde: Viva La Frita
Go see El Verde. Why ? Because I said so. That’s not good enough for ya ? Well how bout if I told you that you are going to have a great time at the show ? That you’ll end up loving the show and laugh your ass off from all the jokes and skits in the show. That you’ll love the way it is cleverly written by play right Anthony Aguilar and has a star studded cast that will amaze you and make you feel like you’re watching a major production in Boyle Heights. Did I mention that El Verde is hilarious ? Because it is. It’s playing all month long Friday through Sunday you none of you have any excuse not to go see it. Not only that but Boyle Heights residents get a discount too. Go see it. You will not be disappointed. It’s a great date night and a great opportunity to see a Casa production at its finest. RESERVATIONS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BECAUSE THERE’S ALWAYS A FULL HOUSE.

Dream Team L.A. Open House
Over the summer I joined up with Dream Team Los Angeles to help with the campaign that’s behind the DREAM Act. The team is a coalition of college support groups, organizations and individual community members combining their efforts to help pass the DREAM Act. With soo many different orgs and individuals out there doing their thing, the team unites all of those resources and people power to get work done. Whether it’s holding/participating in workshops to help people know what the DREAM Act is, how it helps them and how undocumented kids can still get a higher education at the college/university level. On June 23 we had a DREAM Graduation to raise some hell and get major media to take notice and it worked. as we continue to make legislative visits to congressional reps and continue to keep the DREAM Act in the publics conscience, letting people know about the team and what we do is also an integral part of what we do. I know because I’m the co-chair of out reach and recruitment. So with that being said I urge anyone who is interested in learning and/or helping with the DREAM Act campaign to come to the open house and find out what the team is about and meet great like minded people. Name changin’
I admit that at times I can be the most dense person in the world and miss a few details every now and then. Proof of that is in my post when I misspell and omit words. So yesterday afternoon I noticed something out of the ordinary had changed, the name of this auto body shop.
Taste of East L.A.
OK so last time I was called a jerk for not telling people about that East .A. meets Napa event, so don’t say I didn’t give you’se guys a heads up this time around. Even though it is a one day heads up, but still. The event is pretty much what the flier shows except this is an old one so I’ll fill you guys in. Admission ranges from $10 to $25 bucks depending on the package you get. If you pay $10 you will get 1 admission ticket and 15 food coupons which include a drink and dessert. $15 gets you 2 admission tickets and 20 coupons, two drinks and one dessert. $25 which is your best bet gets you 2 admission tickets, 30 coupons, 5 raffle tickets, 2 drinks and 2 desserts. What more could you ask for ? Live music you say ? How bout’ members from Nation of Aztlan playing at the event ? Sounds good right ? Did I mention that the fourth ranked Garfield High School Drum-line will be doing their thing too ? Cause they are. If you have the chance, stop by AJ’s BBQ pit on 3rd and Indiana and get your tickets there so you can just show up to the event and get to eatin’. I’ll be there of course so if you see me, stop by and say hello. Course that’s if you recognize me and have met me before, other wise stay the hell away from me. Kidding, kidding. Primera Taza
Remember a while back ago when I posted my thoughts on Tierra Mia in South Gate and how impressed I was with not only the store but with the quality and variety of coffee they had ? I wish I could say the same for Primera Taza, but I’m being too critical of the place considering it just barely opened up on Friday of last week. So, with only a few days open I can understand that Taza is still finding its bearings and learning as they go. Having had a father that was a creative entrepreneur all my life, I know what it takes and what goes into running your own business. With that in mind, let’s find out what Taza has going for itself.
Casa de Sousa getting evicted
When I stop and think about days of future past and dealing with landlords evicting my family and I from our home/apartment, I remember what it felt like. To have to turn off everything in the house/apartment to make it seem like no one was home. Getting on all floors and looking through the crevace the bottom of the door waiting for the shadows to leave all the while hearing knocking on the door and the manager say, “when are you going to pay your rent ? I know you’re in there. You need to pay soon or else I’m going to have to kick you out of the house/apartment.” I felt that same feeling of uncertainty when I was talking to Conchita Sousa and Fernando Cruz about Cafe Casa de Sousa receiving an eviction notice from the manager in charge of the Placita Olvera merchants and stores. However the circumstances and reasons for Casa de Sousa receiving that eviction notice last week still remain unclear because no one from the management has given them a proper reason for the notice, even after Sousa and Cruz tried talking to them to come to reasonable out come and work things out civily. What’s in a song
I woke up this morning and put my tunes on shuffle. “Sweet Home Alabama” comes up and I ponder to myself, what is the equivalent of that song but for L.A. Cheech and Chong have “Born in East L.A.” a great jam. I was always partial to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers “Under the Bridge” and La Cindy says that Randy Newmans “I Love L.A.” is also a good choice. Hmm… I’m curious. I want to know what are some of the best songs that when you hear them, you think L.A. Any suggestions ?
The be a hero help a hero concert
It’s no secret that I love Casa 0101 and I am a HUGE FAN of that Mexican, Corn Powered Super Hero El Verde. That’s why I want all of you to go and suppport and have a great time at this benefit concert.Also you will help make my wishes come true in seeing more of El Verde on stage. I mean with a line up like that how can you NOT go. Go and eat some corn while your at it too.
