Bad ass urban planner James Rojas, co founder of the Latino Urban Forum, guided angelinos on a tour of nacimiento altars located throughout East L.A. Apparently, from what Victoria D. told me, this is the 8th year he’s doing this and with the gold line up and running, he opted to guide us to adjacent nacimiento altars at various stops. She said that in previous years, the tour was given on bikes. I for one was excited to go on the tour out of curiosity of what the tour would involve, what we would see and expanding my mind to new ideas and concepts and guess what ? Since VD took some pics, you get to come along too. I’ll be your online tour guide of a tour I was part of. Isn’t that kick ass ? You bet your ass it is. I seem to be using the word ass a lot. Sorry 🙂 Continue reading

Everyday in LA
Everyday in LA is a daily photography post.  A snapshot of the city with a weekly drawing. Photos will be posted with questions and readers will be asked to leave their answers in the comments sections.
Here’s the first photo:
Question: What are the three landmarks pictured here?
(Answer correctly and your name will be entered into a drawing for a slightly used black, rolling office chair delivered to your home or office.  Contest runs January 3 – 9.  Winner will be chosen and announced on Sunday, January 10.)
Lincoln Heights Xmas Parade 2009
The Lincoln Heights Xmas Parade was as exciting as ever, probably way better than the HLP one since I’ve heard no reports back from that event. If somehow, for some strange reason, you managed to miss it, follow the link below to check it out. Yes, a bit late but whatever. You know you wanna.
ICE team takes a Starbucks break
A couple of friends and I were at the Little Tokyo Starbucks in early December when we heard a loud engine rumbling. We turn around and it was none other than the ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) team parking their gigantic greyhound bus in the red zone for a coffee stop. We couldn’t see through the windows if there were any “illegals” inside. This was just days after the big ICE sweep of 280 illegal immigrants (some with criminal records!) on December 11.
Does my tax money really go to this kind of bullshit?

And a Cat Named Johnny
This photo is of my Great Uncle Hector who along with my grandmother (there is a photo of her in the same spot) lived in Lincoln Heights for one summer sometime in the late 1930s. The photo was taken on the side of one of the hills that surround Lincoln Heights. I think my uncle said the cat was named Johnny.

RANFLAS
One thing that amazes me is the customization that people do to their cars. I’ve seen $100 Pontiacs with $2000 rims, Japanese cars with disintegrating white body kits, Off Road trucks the size of my house, but nothing tops this kind of custom. Mama Capanita has a bad ass ice cream truck, nice combination of colors. I wonder how many people could fit in there?
25¢ A Pop
Crass
Spotted in the wealthy part of town: In all our decadence people die.
This was being constructed right next to the graffitied trash bin.

Finally, it’s here. Dangerous intersections and all. I took a quick look before the crowds, click ahead to see some pics.
