Fourth Annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar

Bicycling on Western Ave from the LAPL archives. Western Ave used to mark the Western edge of the city. Eastern Ave is on the Eastside and runs through City Terrace.

This Saturday is the annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar where you can discover and explore halls full of Los Angeles history resources. Representatives from local libraries, colleges and other archival places will be there to answer questions and share information. You can also pick up nifty postcards like this one from the City of Los Angeles Publishing Services Division. Film screenings, speakers and lectures will also keep you entertained and busy, so make a day of it!

Donate a camera, watch some films, or follow Eastside traditions to new locations.   Some art notes for your Monday.

PICS: The Boys &  Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles Annual Fundraiser was held this past weekend, and it included a tribute to Edward Maldonado who co-founded the club in 1954,  then known  Eastside Boys Club. Maldonado was born in 1918 and recently passed away on July 24, 2009. Even in his final days, he worked with the club that now serves over 2,000 East Los Angeles youth each year. In his memory, the first Founder’s Award was given to him posthumously, and will be awarded to those whose continue the legacy of the club Maldonado he helped begin 55 years ago.

Boys & Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles now offer a photography program that allows local kids to explore and document their own neighborhood. That is important. If you wish to donate a much needed digital camera, new or used, you can drop it off at the  Boys & Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles, located at 324 N. McDonnell Avenue. Send operable cameras to the attention of Anna Araujo (323) 263- 4955.

FILM: The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival opens its 13th year with “Los Abrazos Rotos” (Broken Embraces) that stars Penélope Cruz. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar, who is this year’s recipient of the festival’s Gabi Lifetime Achievement Award.

The slate of 75 films includes the L.A. premiere of “La Vida Loca,” a documentary on gangs in El Salvador that may have cost French director, Christian Poveda, his life. The Closing Night & Award Ceremony Gala, which will take place on Friday, October 16th at the Paramount Theatre, will feature a special preview screening of “Women in Trouble.”

The Los Angeles Latino Film Festival will be held October 11th to October 16th,  2009, at the Mann Chinese Cinema.

ON THE MOVE: Arte Calidad Cultural Institute’s  Dia De Los Muertos Celebration marks its 10th Anniversary. Yes, this is the same Paper Mache Calavera Exhibition and concert previously held on the 6th Street Bridge, before briefly moving to the Arts District. Now it returns to Boyle Heights on October 24th to October 25th at the Historic Hollbebeck Park (415 S. St. Louis St).  Goya Festival De La Gente partnership with CD14 Jose Huizar includes the Los Angeles Times’ HOY, who will present The Hoy Cultural Neighborhood Family Zone.

NEW LOCATION: Self Help Graphics & Art’s Dia De Los Muertos will be held at the East L.A. Civic Center on November 2, 2009. While the event starts at 5pm, the procession will gather at Belvedere Park’s Virgen de Gauadalupe Mural (Cesar E Chavez and Mednick) at 4pm. Your master of ceremonies at 4801 E. 3rd Street will be, as the flyer says, LA Eastside Blogger Pachuco 3000. Deadly Stylish, a special exhibition curated by Diana Gamboa, will open November 1st.

Westside 101: West Hollywood Bookfair

Some stupid company once put West Hollywood on an eastside map, which was a laugh riot. But after a ritual burning and casting of spells, they saw the error of their fake eastside ways and have now given West Hollywood their own map. Good for them. It’s not often I find myself in this community but how can anyone resist a bookfair? Pa’ los libros!

7-Eleven Opens in Lincoln Heights

Friday’s Grand Opening for the new Lincoln Heights 7-Eleven began a little slow, and the DJ and Laker Girls may have wondered if anyone would show up. No worries. Once the final civic representative arrived,  the ribbon was cut and samples were offered. It happened to be the same time Lincoln High School let out, and word spread via phones and twitter that there were free Slurpees nearby.

As for 7-Eleven, the North Broadway Business District is the kind of location they hope to expand into, as part of their seven-year corporate business plan to take back their convenience market domain. Still, this on-the-spot report shows community outreach by 7-Eleven and business development by Councilman Ed Reyes office is the point of the new store. At the end of the video, the most popular ambassadors of Los Angeles offer some goodwill to the neighborhood.

7-Eleven is located at 3201 N. Broadway, in Lincoln Heights.

Dia de los Muertos 09 at Self Help Graphics & Art

I remember last years Dia de los Muertos. I got my face painted, got a kiss from Leo Limon, ate tamales, rocked out to the bands on stage and hung out with Viki D. and P-3000 through-out the night. I can’t wait to see what this years celebration will bring. That’s why I’m excited about the workshops because it’s like a count down to the big night on Nov. 1 and 2. These workshops are kick ass because you spend an afternoon creating art, something I suck at because the calavera I painted looked like crap. Any who, the workshops are on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and they’re always a lot of fun. So check self helps site for UP TO DATE INFO and what’s going on and mark your calender. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios

It’s that time of the year again where everything that is evil is fun again. That also means that Universal Studios Hollywood is ready to scare the crap outta you with their horror nights. There’s nothing like some pig faced, seven foot goliath scaring the crap out of you with a chain saw buzzing over his head. Yes, Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year. I know this has nothing to do with the Eastside, but stay with me on this one.

Last year the scaremazes based on the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St and Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies gave everyone a good scare. We can all use a good scare or a good laugh from watching people get scare. For this year, the movies Saw, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, Shaun of the Dead and Child’s Play. They’re also including some lives shows based on the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure. Not only that but you’ll be able to go on all the regular rides at night with special twist to them and walk around the Halloween’ed out back lot while riding the terror tram. This will all be ongoing every weekend starting this Friday until Halloween. Event dates are: October 2-3, 9-11, 15-18, 23-25, 28-31. It starts off at 7:00 p.m.; closing hours vary by night throughout the event. You can also get discounted tickets by going to goldstar. Man I love that site :-) If anything else, it’s a great date night because chances are your date will get freaked out and run into your arms. Strangers will also be running into your arms too. trust me on this.

I find it funny whenever I see a converted Wienerschnitzel location because no matter what they do to it it will always look like a Wienerschnitzel.

This old Wienerschnitzel location in Long Beach has been a couple different businesses.  I guess the last one was  a Mexican resturant which did not last long  either I wonder why?

Hollenbeck Police Station party

Did you ever want to see inside the NEW Hollenbeck Police Station as a vistor and not a guest !?! Well this Saturday there is going to be a public dedication ceremony. Tony V., Huizar, Reyes and Bratton are gonna be on hand kicking off this little shindig.

It’s from 6-9 p.m. and it’s free to the public. They are going to be giving station tours, food and have police exhibits on hand. So if you have nothing to do this Saturday check it out. You know you’re going to end up there anyway.

It’s 16 de Septiembre, Mexican Independence day, and there’s still no mention of it on LA Eastside? Isn’t that the Mexican blog anyways? Some people seem to think so. But until they start calling all the other blogs the White people blogs, I refuse to think of it that way. Were just more diverse than the rest. So no, we don’t need to mention this holiday. We don’t need no stinkin’ Fiestas Patrias!

That being said: why has nobody mentioned it? What, all you Eastsiders took a long siesta this weekend? A trabajar cabrones!

Not to worry, I got your requisite stereotypes covered: Let’s go to the Fiestas Patrias! In Lompoc! Uhh, where?
