The topic of Hipster Racism (a phrase originally coined by Carmen Van Kerckhove)Â has been visited in the past by me on LA Eastside, Cruel Secretary over at Racialicious, and by Angry Asian Man over at Angry Asian Man.
Why do people think this kind of thing is clever or smart? There is no difference between this and a thirteen year old boy telling fart jokes.
Maybe we can blame this on Canada since Alanis Morrisette messed up the definition of irony.
Just because something is trying to be ironic it doesn’t mean it’s not racist.

Actually, that sounds like a great idea. Imagine that, history meaning something to people. The newcomers to Los Angeles keep trying to act like our history across the river doesn’t matter, you know, because of some vague point of reference “fluidity”. But we know better.

It’s said that humor like art, or huevos rancheros, is subjective and that one’s taste depends on one’s own persona and upbringing, economic class, ethnicity, and politics.
I kind of fit into the category of a typical Eastside native. Attended the local schools, descendent of immigrants (although as my Grandmother used to tell us, “our people were Mexican hillbillies from New Mexico”), working class family, large family background (the oldest of nine children), I could go on but essentially pretty typical of an Eastside native.
But I have trouble finding Carlos Mencia funny. I know he claims he is from the Eastside and is a typical Eastside native as I have described, but in my opinion his humor has a mean, biased, nasty streak to it. IMO he comes off as a pissed off, politically conservative, self-hating Latino.
Click on the Comedy Central website above for a “bit” of Mencia’s and all this becomes apparent. He somehow thinks his take on the African Americans who suffered and died in the Katrina fiasco are to blame for their own suffering. It’s the old line spouted by racist Bush/Cheney apologists and isn’t funny whatsoever IMO.
On the other hand, the website above that has President Obama reading from a story and using some pretty rude epithets is very funny to me.
In fact I wish he would use the same voice and language when addressing those wealthy executives with the sense of self-entitlement who are still living large on we the taxpayers dollar.
“You ain’t my bitch nigga, buy your own damn friesâ€!
But as they say, humor, like home is where you find it. Whaaaa?
Chimatli mentioned this murder in a previous post, I decided to drive by the scene the morning after and take a picture. As you can see, everything looks normal on this street, except for the chalk mark near the sidewalk, no doubt circling a bullet case, and some shattered glass going the other way. I think we can make out a trajectory. Every media outlet said it was in an alley, but it wasn’t. Which proves that the media is no longer doing it’s job of actually reporting, keep that in mind for future reference.
The night of the incident, police quickly speculated it was “gang related”, yet they still haven’t figured out her hometown. I’d like to know why they use this “gang related” term before they have all the details, why don’t they instead just call it an unsolved murder? Or do we not deserve that much? It may ultimately be true (Lincoln Heights is no stranger to gang violence) but that moniker is used too often as a code for ‘don’t worry about this one, there’s a good enough reason.” The name of the victim, a young woman of 25 years, was released: Breanne A. Hanna.
R.I.P. young lady, no matter what social group and stats sheet they finally decide is your proper place.

Dear Gato 103.1,
Is it true? Are you really gonna play cumbias? Because lots of stations have said they were and ended up in a funky morass of Durangense and Marco Antonio Solis.
There are a few tears for the former station that came before you, perhaps it’s because those folks haven’t really learned to appreciate the beauty and the glory of what’s called (in English) Mexican Regional Music but what we call Norteñas, Rancheras, Banda, Corridos, Cumbias and yes, even Duranguense.
I promise to love you Gatito if you play my two favorite songs on Los Angeles radio at the moment:

There’s been lots of mentions on various blogs about the demise of Indie 103.1, purportedly a source for awesome independent non-corporate music. Maybe that was true, but I didn’t listen to that station so I’ll have to take them at their word. But since the corporation that gave you said Indie station is only changing the format and language, I’m pretty sure it was kinda corporate and will continue to be corporate, only this time in a language some people in Los Angeles can’t understand.
If I really liked this “indie” format, I’d probably be sad too. But as I’ve noticed when it’s happened before, there seems to be an additional undercurrent of loathing for the transition from English to Spanish, as if they could tolerate any other insipid music better if it was only in a language they could understand. Kinda like they lost one for the team. As some guy mentions:
“Yeah, because what LA desperately needs is another Latin station. Thank you, Clear Channel, for being so fucking awesome!”
Sorry for your loss ese, but damn, we are part of LA too, you know. A pretty big part, as our corporate overlords have noticed. I can understand crap music in two languages so I know that the problem with bad music is the corporate/money model and not the lengua it’s in, that’s just the way the beast works. Plus, let’s not lose the forest for the trees: you do realize that El Gato is supposedly going to be playing cumbias? I really doubt they’ll keep to that but that should be a salve for the Spanish wound. Err, you all like cumbias, right?
Now if only they could turn KROQ into a 24 hour station for Los Originales de San Juan, then 2009 could safely be declared a perfect year!

Newport coast, it turns out, has become even less black and brown. Newport Coast was so undiverse that in 2001 it attached itself to Newport Beach as to not look so oddly white in a quickly changing multicultural world.
You can’t even find out how white it is, because it’s not only white, but rich and rich people don’t want you in their business.

Though many people are calling it an African-American show (oddly I never really got that) I called it the people of color, multiculty orgy show. It was awesome she regular had people on from the African-American, Latino-American and Asian-American blogosphere (and not just during our appropriate month you didn’t even have to be married to a white person to get on her show) pretty much the only person in the established media who viewed non-white people in the blogosphere as relevant to the editorial conversations of the day.

In these hard economic times we all need ways to make money, though I read in Editor and Publisher that newspapers that were neighborhood or ethnic based were doing surprisingly well. I hope both of you are in the doing well group. As you know the LA Times got lots of mileage out of the deaths of readers who looked pretty similar to your readership though their Homicide Report Blog.
I personally didn’t care for it that much owing to their lacking of coverage areas of Latino and African-American life. I felt that it was a sort of one sided type coverage that just perpetrated stereotypes. Many people of color did not agree with me. They feel that living on your knees is better than being dead. Even though we all agreed that the coverage was going to do absolutely nothing in regards to stopping crime. Continue reading
