¡Sounds Like Burning: Play From Your Fucking Heart!

¡Sounds Like Burning is about psychos, angels and psychotic angels. Who else deserves mention?

Mister Bill Hicks introduces the series because he is… Bill Hicks. He condensed the first law of all the Arts: Play From Your Fucking Heart!

The performances to be aired here are rigodamnediculous. The biblical scholar Bon Scott once commanded: Let There Be Light. And There Was Light.

Bask in it.

Can one make the unknown known? Tune in and Trip out.

Bill Hicks “Burning Issues”

Ron Shock remembers:

Other than the drunken orgies… we (Bill Hicks and I and the rest of the Comedy Outlaws) were pretty wild, we did a tremendous amount of drugs and we drank a tremendous amount of whiskey, and usually we did the drugs and the whiskey together. But there was one show we did… Hicks is on stage doing his impression of Elvis where he uses toilet paper instead of handkerchiefs and he would wipe his forehead with toilet paper and throw the toilet paper into the crowd. Jimmy Pineapple who was just drunk as a skunk comes running from side stage and tackles Bill, for no reason, just to do it, right in the middle of a show, in front of 900 people and tackles him and as Bill is laying on the ground without missing a beat, keeps on with his act, he’s still Elvis…

  1. Fuckin A!! Good post CT. As an oldtimer raised on music and the arts, and life, that came from the fucking heart I second that emotion, from Bill Hicks that is. If I have to hear one more whiny motherfucker singing the same sounding crap I’m going to stick a needle in my eye! (or somewhere else).
Where are the James Browns, Frank Zappas’, Miles Davis’ Cal Tjaders’, Jimi Hendrix’s, Dinah Washington’s, Malcom X’s, Picasso’s, Edward Hoppers’, Marlon Brando’s, Al Pacino’s, and the Pancho Villas’?

  2. They’re all dead, Don. ‘Cept Pacino. Also i thought you were through with those needles? And at your age!

  3. Great to see Bill Hicks getting some love on the East Side. Arizona Bay and Rant in E Minor are really good albums. Arizona Bay is an LA diss, btw. And I mean the title in and of itself. Just think about it. But it’s just that, an L.A. diss, because hes really dissing L.A., the culture of fakeness, not the real Los Angeles. In fact, he goes farther to defend the real Los Angeles in his bit about Rodney King, the LAPD, and the riots, on Arizona Bay. His routine about magic mushrooms growing in cow shit being by design, to evolve cavemen into civilized people, has me lmao just thinking about it. His political jokes should be in history books, especially the one where he says that the reason tourists can’t walk up to the actual window that Lee Harvey Oswald supposedly shot out of is because once seeing that view, they’d know the shot was fucking impossible. You reminded me to listen to those two CDs again, City Terrace. It’s been a couple of years. Thank you.

  4. Man, that gave me chills. Bill Hicks was fearlessscaryrighteousgenius. Makes me miss him that much more.

  5. You got that right, DQ. That is kind of what I’m messing with in this “series”. Just lay out some interesting/intense videos/songs/etc. that impacted my little world. No big deal. I say, “Why not?” That reminds me, sometimes my aunt calls me over and she has on some stupid novela and eye restrain myself from throwing my shoe at the tv, in the brave manner of Iraqi journalism. So I understand your revulsion, if that is what it is. We don’t want much: just a little thing called originality. Did you put Dinah Washington and Pancho Villa in the same sentence? That’s crazy, hence quite sound.

    Mr. T,

His jokes should be in the history books. What’s a little honesty? Guy was very insightful and more than that, he meant his shit. I like how he’s doing his act and it’s funny as hell, at least to me, and there is that silence or murmuring. “We’re so clean cut. Sieg Heil! Heil! Heil!” It’s blazing AND true. Sure it’s funny but it’s more than that. All in 1:29. It’s like a song to me. The cds you mention are good and there are some dvds also, the appropriately titled “Sane Man” is good.

    WC,

Your new word applies here. Funny, a friend just saw the post and wrote me, “I could see why you thought it was funny, but it didn’t make me laugh.” To each their own. Dead and gone but not so gone. His words still resonate. I thought he was more than just a comedian. But, that’s just me. I can also watch badminton for hours, so there you go.

  6. I did place Dinah Washington and Pancho Villa in the same sentence CT, but not without some thought.
I know it seems strange but they can be included among the giants that are not with us anymore (including Bill Hicks sadly), and had what is referred to as heart or corazon or ganas or soul and they followed thier instinct and did the right thing and put it all out there without fear of repercussion or petty social criticism and they suffered for thier, art, vision and truth.
Where are these pathfinders and soulful spirits that are in such short supply nowadays.

  7. Seems Dave Chapelle had some of their spirit. Funny how anyone who comes close winds up disappearing, one way or another.
