I hope that every American, regardless of where he lives, will stop and examine his conscience about this and other related incidents. This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened. All of us ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish his children to be treated, but this is not the case.
I know the proponents of this law say that the majority approves of this law, but the majority is not always right. Would women or non-whites have the vote if we listen to the majority of the day, would the non-whites have equal rights (and equal access to churches, restaurants, hotels, retail stores, schools, colleges and yes water fountains) if we listen to the majority of the day? We all know the answer, a resounding, NO!
Today we are committed to a worldwide struggle to promote and protect the rights of all who wish to be free. In a time of domestic crisis men of good will and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics and do what is right, not what is just popular with the majority. Some men comprehend discrimination by never have experiencing it in their lives, but the majority will only understand after it happens to them.
I want one.
@benito: The Arizona Bill is simply an attempt to enforce Federal law that says [paraphrased] “immigrants must have documents.” Your resistance to the Arizona Bill is resistance to enforcing the law – that’s misplaced. If you don’t like the law, change it!! Maybe you should be looking at the Federal law instead of complaining about the Arizona bill.
This isn’t about the law. That’s a cop out. And I’ll prove it. The same people who are for immigration “laws” because it’s the law and that’s what the law says and the law’s the law’s the law by golly….want to CHANGE the law to make people born here in America to illegal parents illegal too. So obviously this has nothing to do with merely enforcing the law as it is, because these minionmen nativists want to change the law to fit their ideology. They just want to keep Mexicans out of America. And, it’s not going to happen because the corporate world needs Mexicans for labor. Not that I agree with that exploitation either, but that’s just the reality. Mexicans are getting here one way or the other. The people who run this country need them. Period. People who voted for Reagan, and for Wall Street Republicans like him ever since (including W. Bush) only have themselves to thank. They thought they were voting for free market values but all they were really doing was voting for union busting and wall street control over the market, and part of that package is the exploitation of cheap immigrant labor, legal or not. If people who watched Glen Beck had more than 3 brain cells a piece, they would know that.
