Last push for the DREAM Act

I think most people know by now that I ain’t got no papers and if you didn’t,well now you do. In the past, I’ve posted a few things here and there for the DREAM Act. I do enough of that everywhere else, so that there’s no need for me to keep blasting it out on other sites I contribute to, but this is one of those few times where I dip my spoon in several cups. Just in case you haven’t heard, the DREAM Act is going to come up for a vote before the end of this week, before the lame duck session in congress finishes. So, basically what is happening is that all the Democrats that are leaving wanna stick it to the Republicans and they’re using the DREAM Act and possibly AG Jobs to do it.

The works of hundred of thousands of students is culminating into a single week. 9 years of organizing, passing and defending laws like AB 540 that help undoc students make the best of our situations have spread across the country. This has been the biggest year the movement has ever seen. Since May, undoc individuals have been participating in civil disobedience, hunger strikes and rallies that follow in the foot steps of past movements. The movement as a whole has moved mountains and sacrificed soo much this year that the DREAM Act not passing isn’t an option, it’s a matter of when.

This Tuesday there will be a march and Vigil at the federal building. 300 N. Los Angeles St.  at 5 pm. Community organizations including NAKASEK, IDEAS, and CHIRLA will be taking part in this vigil.

Help us in making phone calls to Senators and Congressmen and women to support the DREAM Act by voting yes on it when it comes up. Call 1 (866) 587-3023.  Ask operator to transfer your call to any of the following senators: Bob Bennet (UT), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Hutchison (TX), Brownback (KS), Kirk (IL), Voinovich (OH), Snowe (ME), Collins (ME), Lemieux (FL) and leave your message. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a resident of that state, y’all are U.S. citizens and that’s more than enough.

You can donate to Dream Team Los Angeles, the grass-roots group I work with in making all this happen. We rely strictly on donations and help from other people because we’re all working college students, making things happen outta of our own pocket at times. Email Cyndi Bendezu at cbendezu@ucla.edu if you would like to make a donation in person. We also have a Facebook Causes page “DREAM Act Now as a stand-alone bill” where you can make a donation:  http://www.causes.com/causes/187909?m=7387025b.

You can send checks payable to:

You can even buy a poster or two and help directly as well.

Even if you just share this link with other folks on facebook and twitter, that still helps. The DREAM Act is gonna pass this year. The movement has worked too hard for it not to pass. But we can’t do it alone, we need all the support and help we can get.

  1. It would be nice if the most spineless Democratic majority in history could pass at least one progressive thing before exiting. Health care and credit card acts were a joke.
