Working as a Teacher’s Aide at Lincoln High School I’ve been hearing a lot of talk of budget cutbacks as well as very probable layoffs for teachers. When I hear how many teachers may be layed off I wonder how the LAUSD supposes Lincoln High School will manage to function with less teachers in a student body of 3000+ kids! In response the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) organized a one hour walk-out for teachers, dubbed: One Hour’s Pay for Our Kids. Even though I am not in the UTLA I also participated out there on the sidewalk of Broadway. I am pretty sure that almost every teacher was out there, plus the support of some students!
After the jump, some photos:
Here we have a view from Lincoln Park Ave., looking down Broadway.
Here we have some students helping out!:
Timely coverage, yay! Good pics as well.
We saw a couple of kids, probably 4 or 5 years old, walking right by Sunset at 7 o’clock on Friday night holding up no budget cut signs. It’s insanity.
The LAUSD tried to stop the protest but the Teacher’s union prevailed and I’m glad it went of. I was on Sunset Bl. picketing in solidarity with all the teachers. Cars were honking in support, including the police cars driving by. I guess the cops realized; We’d better Invest now on these kid’s educations or possibly we’ll(the cops) have to be dealing with them in the future!
This might be a little belated but I hope the LAUSD teachers were able to get their demands. Definitely some of the most valuable and under appreciated folks in LA.
