Metro is going to be holding rail safety meetings in the next few days. I saw a flier walking to school and then read the press release from Metro. Here is a list of times and locations where residents can go to and ask questions and find out what it takes to be safe around the tracks.Â
~ Benjamin Franklin Library, 2200 East First Street, Tuesday, March 3, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 14, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
~ East Los Angeles Public Library, 4837 East Third Street, Saturday, March 7, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Wednesday, March 11, 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
~ Little Tokyo Library, 203 South Los Angeles Street, Thursday, March 19, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 21, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
~ Stevenson Public Library, 803 Spence Street, Tuesday, March 24, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 4, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
~ Anthony Quinn Library, 3965 East Cesar Chavez Ave., Monday, April 6, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
And they also explain what the meetings are about in a nut shell:
~ Exercise caution at all times.
~ Always wait for “walk†signal before entering crosswalk
~ Always use crosswalk
~ Always be prepared for what may be coming from around the corner
~ Always look both ways before crossing any street
~ Never make a left turn on a red arrow signal
~Â Never make illegal right turns
~ Never run to catch a bus or train
~ Never walk, play near or on rails tracks
~ Never jaywalk across the street
~ Obey all the traffic signals and warning signs
~ Watch for TRAIN signal
~ Watch for buses and trains from both directions
So when kids get run over by the at grade gold line train METRO can say, “We did our part, we had a meeting.”
Screw Metro. Why is the onus only on the pedestrian, the bus rider…lets see how when the Expo line is built when it goes through the Westside. Nowhere near the Westside will Expo be at grade.

The name of the safety program is morbid:
“Look, Listen and Stay Alive”
So the penalty for noncompliance is death? Are we living in the 1890s or something?
So true Alienation, I mean really, my god we’re in 2009 and the best we have in modern safety technology is a brochure that says: Look both ways.
What the hell?
I have a new slogan:
Don’t die, because we can’t afford it anymore. METRO
Quit trying to get the Gov’t & MTA to compensate for individual carelessness & stupidy. Most people dying at rr crossings are at fault themselves. Use common sense. Don’t depend on agencies & gov’t to hold your hand while you cross a street.
The real shock is that in 2009 some people don’t know how to navigate a crosswalk yet.
Browne; it sounds like your saying “MTA: Save us from our own negligence! It’s your fault if we fail!”
When’s tha EastSide Rail / Subway gonna be done..

Walter why don’t you tell that to the Westside, Santa Monica and Crossroads? Crossroads the school of the rich and liberal in Hollywood in also believes that their kids are too “stupid” to not avoid the rails and don’t want at grade rail built by their schools.
Are the rich stupid too? Or are you of the mindset that the working class and poor should just be happy at what they get and watch out for the train.
Go ahead, go tell them that that Metro is going to give workshops instead of not building at grade, because workshops and and not building at grade is practically the same.

Yeah go to one of these meetings that they are having in Santa Monica and show us how adamant you are about the stupid kids of the Westside.

I can’t wait till thing starts running. It’s going to make life easier for so many people. I’ve seen some of the construction in BH and East LA and you can just see the mobs of people walking around this area that will likely be taking it a stop or two just to save themselves an hour of so of walking. It will help traffic. They always say that you can’t really build a train or subway in LA because of how spread out it is but has it really been tried? No. Right wing taxpayers interest groups have stood in the way of it, not to mention the oil companies and auto manufacturers. If they could make the N. Hollywood line go all the way to Sylmar, and the purple and green lines go all the way to the beaches, I’d rarely have to drive in LA again. That’s one less car polluting the atmosphere, and I know I wouldn’t be alone.
I do think the Gold Line will make life easier for some people, but some bus lines Metro are cutting to connect with the Gold Line, this wouldn’t so much be a problem, but when I lived in BH I noticed that lots of people worked graveyard, so the trains stop running at 12am with certain bus lines being cut is going to be a problem for some people and also what’s up with the vastly different way it’s built depending on the economics of the neighborhood.
Look at the Gold Line though Pasadena and look at the Blue Line, they can’t even bother to put bumpers so visually impaired people won’t fall in between the cars on the Blue Line that goes through South Central.
Look at how the Gold Line is built through Highland Park and then look at it in Pasadena, that’s completely freakin outrageous and the people of the alt transit, Obama, Democratic set need to recognize that and not just glaze over that, like its no big deal, it is a very big deal.
The Eastside and South LA shouldn’t be thought as communties that rails have to go through so that people with more money can get somewhere.
The communties of South LA and the Eastside deserve just as much consideration as the west of Labrea set.

Yeah, while we’re at it, let’s get rid of seat belts, crosswalks, and streetlights. If you get run over crossing the street at night, it’s your own fault. It’s not like we just voted for a fat sales tax increase to buy us a public transit system.
How about some barriers like they have on the blue line along Fig and Washington, at least? I haven’t seen those going up along Indiana and 3rd.
What the hell happened to standards?
“So the penalty for noncompliance is death? Are we living in the 1890s or something?”
Yes. The penalty for phenomenally stupid and/or reckless things usually is death.
I’m sorry folks, but as alienation points out, this isn’t the 1890’s, and if you get hit by a train today, you have got to be of the dumbest type imaginable.
People don’t sympathize with you, only with the others you may hurt or kill and the operators you traumatize with your selfish actions.
It doesn’t matter how many signs or warnings Metro puts up, there will always someone dumber than nails who will get run over by the train despite the steps. I say good riddance, the gene pool just got that much better.
An idiot is an idiot is an idiot, no matter what his skin color is, or how much money he has in his bank account or whether he voted for Obama or McCain.
At least the MTA is trying to educate idiots on how not to get run over by a train, why it’s a bad idea to play in traffic, etc.
And remember, the middle section of the Eastside extension is underground.
Many of the fatalities on the Blue Line have actually been suicides. There’s no way to stop those, except for actually building a full subway, and even then, it’s still possible for people to kill themselves.
Undoubtedly, the Gold Line will hit some people. But cars hit people in Los Angeles every day. Does that mean we should outlaw cars? Of course not.
I know that when it happens, a bunch of doofuses are gonna start yelping about the “killer train.” Everybody has to get used to it. Los Angeles was built by the railroad, and it always was a railroad town until we were hypnotized into accepting the freeways and the “car oriented lifestyle.” Now, we’re putting back a lot of the rail transit. Good. It’s about time.
