It’s funny how things always seem to appear when they are needed. In my weekend rambling through the city I was hit by a thought of graffiti as finger flutings (for those that don’t know they are cave art from Paleolithic times). Is graffiti made art when it doesn’t claim a “hood” or name a “gang”? If a doodle is made with spray paint and a series of cats is tagged randomly around the city or (as the post pictures) a message of “LEARN” is thrown up in an urban setting, is graffiti art? I would argue, Yes. Once the “criminal” act of defacing property is questioned and the label of community “beautification” is applied, then art is part of the gentrification process, no? I am not a lawyer, yet I have “learned” in my quest of life understandings that semantics, syntax, and wordsmithing takes you a long way.
