Here’s the warning lay off list from July-December of 2009. It is a list that companies have to send to EDD so you can get your unemployment and food stamps!! The number represents the number of people being let go. The date is when it’s happening. Your boss knows when they are going to let you know, but they don’t tell you. You might take some pencils and staplers and you know how much those items cost to replace.

A lot of regions throughout the country have seen double digit unemployment rates for some time now, including our entire state. Whatever this 10% unemployment boogie man means, a lot of us are living it. I’ve noticed that the media didn’t start harping on this 10% thing until Obama was inaugurated (as if it was like 3% when Bush was still in office on Jan. 19th…). Every now and then I’ll flip to the cable news channels just for kicks and see that big 10% graphic, usually on Fox News. They make it sound as if the second that number hits 10% nation wide, an atom bomb’s going to detonate in the middle of the country. The economy is in a crisis, that’s obvious. But some of the more conservative media outlets are really trying to use this 10% breaking point to create more Obamaphobia.
The 15% unemployment in Michigan is interesting, because when I talk to people about that number, they are like, “Oh that’s ok, because it’s always been high there.” And I go yeah, but then I think about it and in my head I think this is the problem. It’s a problem when certain people are unemployed. It’s a problem when certain people get shot. It’s a problem when certain people don’t have a nice place to send their kids to school.
It seems like only certain people matter.
And that’s pretty interesting.
While I know lots of people are trying to use these numbers to be anti-Obama, I’m not really thinking about him. I think it’s great and fabulous that he is president, but in general he’s part of the status quo. I wasn’t crazy about Clinton and I’m currently observing Obama. Yes McCain would have been much, much, much worse, but I’m not going to sit back and not say anything because the current guy is “trying” right now and is a Democrat. That’s great he is trying, but there are people who have been unemployed since 2000 and for them it’s even worse now. And the gov’t is like a significant other.
If you sit back and think how wonderful your S/O is, cook them dinner, buy them whatever they want, and you never ask for anything, put your whole destiny and future in the hands of that S/O, then that S/O is not going to get you anything. That S/O will take you for granted, because you are not a partner you are a pet that can talk.
The gov’t works by you saying what the problem is. And you need to say it loud and obnoxious.
Currently I don’t give a damn about AIG or Goldman Sachs or people in real estate, but currently these are the people that are asking for help and they are getting it, but it seems like to me that the regular people are too busy being good faithful dogs to this currently administration instead of good partners.
This is not an Obama problem, this is a US problem. It needs to be stated more and loudly. The joblessness in this country is insane and this is something I talked about before Obama. I have blogged about this in the beginning of 2008, so while this maybe a new thing for many of you to read in the blogosphere it’s not really new if you’ve been reading my writings.
And the boogie man isn’t the fact that we have double digit unemployment. The boogie man (who is real, I saw him at Burning Man) is that since Dec of 2007 we haven’t been making enough jobs to keep up with the people who need to be employed. Each month we have to make one hundred thousand jobs to keep everyone employed, we haven’t made that in TWO YEARS. That’s real data. That’s not some made up media bs number to scare you, that’s real. It’s been bad for quite some time. I thank god that the mainstream media is now finally addressing this issue even if they are doing it in broken crayon because the average American doesn’t have the attention span to pay attention to anything that requires too many math calculations.
Hopefully people will understand the magnitude of this situation and get a bit proactive.

What’s crazy is that even these numbers don’t reflect the number of people that supposedly stopped looking for work, I guess cuz they were fine being poor and not being able to make ends meet, which is anyone that goes beyond a certain time frame of being unemployed. Total farce is what it is.
It’s time we come up with a different model on how people can get by. There’s enough resources, maybe this country needs to rethink how we pass them out.
El Chavo I also think that the numbers are not accurate. If you look at the labor population and the number of jobs being created, which haven’t kept up with that in two years you could do a true caculation of what the true unemployment is. The thing is the fact are all there. All it would take is a person to sit down and crunch the numbers. Currently according to BLS only 65.7% of people are working or particpating.
Now what is their definition of people who are trying to participate?
What is the definition of the labor force? (I’m trying to find it on the BLS.)
Do they count disabled people, because that group of people (especially the visually impaired) have a high unemployment rate and I know for a fact that population wants to work, but no one will hire them.
No one wants to sit at home and collect a check. That’s the last thing people want to do, they’ll do it if there are no options, but it kills you a little inside when you can’t do little crap like pay your rent or buy unexpired milk.
So that’s 35% of people they claim aren’t particpating so don’t count in the number of unemployed. I am assuming they are counting housewives in this number, but how many people do you know who are women who don’t want to work, even if they have children. I know women take off a few weeks to have children, but in general the vast majority of people I knew who did that wanted their job back and I know in less protected fields that’s probably harder to make happens so the gov’t just marks them down as not participating.

So if you look at that 35% of non participating labor force and add that to the 9.5% that’s about 45% of people who aren’t working.
I personally think the nonparticipation number is inflated.
And lets not get into people who are working parttime in shit jobs (shit job to me is not the actual job, but a job with no benefits are makes you pay so much for benefits you don’t opt to get them because you have to make rent and eat, minimum wage, but gives you like 30 hours so slightly too many hours to better yourself, but not enough hours to make it, and crappy retirement,) because that’s the only job that they can get to hire them.
And another thing with all of this unemployment the amount that it cost to buy stuff (CPI) went up 0.7%.

We’re in a Depression. The unemployment stats were altered during the Reagan era to hide real unemployment. These bank executives with their TARP money are screwing us over, and protecting their own interests. They should be in jail. Let the credit unions run the economy for the next decade.
We are in a depression Alienation. You know what I’m wondering about the 300 people who are getting laid off from the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel on July 27. That’s a lot of people. And I wonder do they know?
I think the list of companies that are laying off and I’m assuming that doesn’t include the little companies and the people who hire people as temps or consultants (even though temps and consultants often work at places for years and forget that they are temps and consultants) that have smaller profits is just amazing. It’s just amazing if you look at the list of people who are reportedly getting laid off compared to years priors.
All of those numbers are people and yeah that’s obvious, but these are people who are going to lose their jobs and probably won’t find another one, at least not making the same level of money until next year, if I were an optimistic person.
Many of these are people who never had to be on food stamps or take the bus or survive solely on unemployment and if you have children, it’s just scary. It just breaks my heart. I know these people have families and the idea of a parent losing their job and having to struggle to put food on the table is something that really disturbs me.
I work with adults and children and half of my parents have lost jobs. I see kids with their parents selling candy, soda, water on the Blue Line and they aren’t immigrants. I see Latinos and African-Americans who I know have been here for generations doing this now and it’s surreal. I never in my life thought I would live in a time in America where people had to try so hard to just survive.
I always buy candy from these kids. It usually just sits in my bag and melts. I want to help, but I truly don’t know how. I can’t create real jobs.
