The Best Thing About Boyle Heights? Some White Guy

Really? Really! At least according to LA City Beat, which picks “the best things in your neighborhood” in it’s latest issue. Who is it? Why, it’s Ron Gormon…whoever the fuck that is. Since you probably don’t know him either, here is the fascinating entry:

Boyle Heights
Ron Garmon
There used to be a real swing to Boyle Heights, they tell me. Most of this was just a quick whoosh of air from people ducking behind walls and flowerpots and lampposts and fat people when they saw Hunter S. Thompson coming toward them. Oh, it was also the case that Thee Midniters and Los Lobos brought wild nights and neighborhood pride to clubs that have since (of course) been murdered most foul. These days, there is little to commend in the sad, dingy nabe – except for one bright shining star: our very own Mister Ron Garmon.

You can see him, with his gleaming pale mull-hawk and fierce blue peepers, striding purposefully for a bus. (Just look for the guy who looks like Sting, or Rutger Hauer, or Rod Stewart, but mostly Sting.) You can see him, focused furiously on a far horizon, mostly because he’s on drugs. You can befriend him! He has many friends! He is kind, and handsome, and a man of talent and taste. Ron Garmon? So recommended. 5209 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., (323) 938-1700. (RS)

Oh, I guess he writes for them. Hey, and checkout his handsome face. Ay que chulo! Now I know who to congratulate for being the best thing someone could scrounge up about that “sad, dingy nabe” where I grew up.

Is this supposed to be a joke? Jaja, muy chistoso cabron.  If the media, blogs, westsiders, and newbies weren’t so consistently dismissive and confused about this part of town, maybe I’d laugh too. But reading such Dude-Bro humor as I was trying my first PinkBerry dessert (cuz I want to understand you Westies and your ways) just made me want to spit my yogurt out as an act of defiance. Thanks LA City Beat, you really made my day!

PS. The yogurt was good, but you Westies go crazy over nothing.

  1. This reminds me of the Amy Winehouse syndrome formerly known as the Elvis syndrome.

I was on the Montebello 40 the other day and this older lady was like, motioning towards my place where I do some undercover work with my friend (my friend also does hair so let me know if you want to get hooked up with glamor hair, all ethnic types!!!) and the older lady was like, is the owner going to fix that. Referring to my building, though I don’t live there anymore I still work there. She told me how cool she thought it was that someone had bought the building, but she thought they would make it look nice and not leave it all industrial and I just said I didn’t know, though I did know.

I knew that building looked that way in this purposeful hipster bullshit way and that all of the people in the building never went into the neighborhood and where scared of the neighborhood (I know because they told me.) I know they think I am weird for taking the bus and washing my clothes down the street, but I left Los Feliz to get away from certain kinds of people and ended up finding those same people in BH…oh well.

That was pretty disrespectful. I mean if it was some made up neighborhood like Bicycle Land that would have been ok, but…not cool, not cool.

  2. makes me want to burn copies of City Beat.

    que babosos!!!

a glamorized druggie. Seems white people are cool on drugs and when they are in rehab.

Us on the other hand are just criminals.

  3. ok, seriously… WTF!? they’re talking about “every neighborhood has something that deserves a story” and this “shining star” is the deserving story for our eastside hood? no chinguen! that’s seriously messed up!

  4. This past July, when exclusive Art Forum magazine FINALLY acknowledged Self Help Graphics (after 37 years), it was to call them a bunch of stupid Mexicans who demonstrated a “failure” to earn! desgraciados los he de ver…….loved your piece!

  5. This LA City Beat piece reminds me of the time LAist had this stoner dude cover Watts for the Neighborhood Project. The only thing the lamer could come up with was to watch old folks walk into a senior center and take blurry pics from his car window.

  6. Comment I set to all the staff at L.A. Citybeat.
    Please excuse the bad words!

Galco’s is in Eagle Rock….???!!…..it’s a short 6 blocks from Mr. T’s which you tout as the best in Highland Park, which w/the exception of soundman Arlo and booker Gus, is a shithole that even the most DIY’est of bands do not like playing due to the Rambo-ish security and price gouging at the bar….do some fucking homework….get out a little….fact checking? ..hmmmmmm what is that?……
Ron Garmon is the best thing in Boyle Heights??
That’s all you jackasses could come up with?
You are obviously a bunch of transplants w/no roots to your new city….Spent any time driving around something other than what you wankers call the “Eastside”?……tried walking or driving around the real Eastside?
“hmmmmmmm…….lemme see…..Boyle Heights is too scary….we’ll just say Ron Garmon is the best thing there……….”
What about institutions like…..El Tepeyac..?…yes it has been written about a million times and you pompous asses probably even know about it……….But what about the New Formosa Cafe – owned and ran by a son of one of the original owners of the East West Cafe on 1st in Downown, now called Chop Suey Cafe – which used to be a treat for generations of Eastsiders and Downtowners ? You probably don’t even know about that…..what about the Breed St. Schul – no I’m not Jewish – oldest still standing bldg. of what is left of the once massive Jewish population of Boyle Heights………….what about Otomisan? Oldest Japanese restaurant still left from the one massive Japanese population of Boyle Heights….and the Japanese Buddhist temples that are still there?………what about, just the historical intersection of Soto and Cesar Chavez (formerly Brooklyn) with it’s hotbed of activity and historic murals, some from the early 70’s, which still remain?……….What about Cinco Puntos or Carioca? oh, sorry……of course you don’t know about them………….
Don’t even get me started w/what you missed in Eagle Rock……oh, you probably don’t even know where that is…………
Go back to fucking Brooklyn, Indianapolis, Ohio or wherever the fuck you came from and write about something you know…………..
Or, did I miss the point? Is this an April Fool’s best of issue?
And yes, I’ll fight all of you, anytime, anywhere…………
