I don’t know why I care. It actually makes me look bad, a so-called vegetarian succumbing to eating ground up shrimp powder? I mean, why not just go for some dolphin or tuna or shark or lobster instead of the roach of the sea? Cuz I’m an idiot, that’s why.

Yet here I am once again excitedly reminding you that during these few weeks of cuaresma you might consider trying that odd and irrelevant plate of Tortas de Camaron, a dish that will disappear for another year once the zombie Jesus squirms his way out of that tomb. It’s a strange seasonal option: the dish consists of tortas (or tortitas) which are fried shrimp-powder infused egg batter, topped with nopalitos and doused with a red chile sauce. Its the poor persons way of not eating land animals as an act of sacrifice (oh please!) meant to appease some Catholic tradition or other. I used to know, now I don’t care. It’s just a time of year with much more food options at Mexican restaurants for vegetarians. And bad vegetarians as well.

There’s something satisfying about the simplicity of this plate, its humble origins, and the pleasing contrast of textures. It just works.

It’s an option quite common all over the Eastside, might be hard to find in the rest of Los Angeles though. I once called 5 different “Mexican” places on the Westside of town, none of them seemed to know what I was talking about. Though I bet if I could have talked to the folks in the kitchen, then It might have been a different story. This time I was checking out Lencho’s, that Lincoln Heights spot that has changed hands quite a bit in the past years, though I hope this current crop of owners and their Sinalo style fare stick around.

The requisite chips and salsa. At no extra charge. Aka, a proper restaurant.

Though it looks kinda boring and unspectacular, this is easily the best example of the dish I’ve had to date. Never mind that the rice and beans were perfect, which in itself is an odd occurrence. The tortitas were the right balance of nopales, tortas, and chile sauce. Even though it was a quite mild sauce in terms of spiciness, it was rich with flavor, the kind you just want to spoon up and drink. Plus these tortas were soft and pliable, though they kept their form. Too many as of late have been quite hard and tough to eat. Not at Lencho’s.

I may try other places but now I know where to cure my cravings.

Sometimes when I have free time, by which I mean time when I’m avoiding doing the things I’m supposed to do, I like to go on a walk around my neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, just to see que pasa. Usually there’s not too much excitement, but today I saw a huge Mexican Futbol jersey hanging on the side of the Home Despot and a bunch of stalls over on Ave 22 and figured I’d better see what all the mitote was about. And all of a sudden my lil’ walk turned into an exciting minute of celebrity spotting and a glimpse at one fine toilet. Since you probably also didn’t know about this parking lot festival, click ahead to see a few pics of how it went down!

Not too many people. Maybe they didn’t advertise this well enough, aside from the poster at the entrance. I don’t usually go inside, I just hang out outside looking for a chamba to pay for the chelas. Maybe that’s why I hadn’t heard of this event. I’m pretty sure the well dressed couples in this photo are either owners or some form of management. Or maybe they just wanted to check out the cool toilet.

I’ve seen these blow up futbol fields before, where they usually have some 5 minute 3 on 3 matches. There was nobody waiting to play.

There were a few people waiting to meet El Matador. I’m not a fan of lines plus I’d seen him enough times during his Galaxy days. I’m gonna pass.

There he is! Luis Hernandez himself, “leyenda del futbol Mexicano.”

Finally! The super cool toilet! It’s somehow new and better! It has a pitchman! It has a booth! Rated best flush! Easiest surface to keep clean! I was hoping to break it in but they were having none of it. No fun.

Yet more poisons from the ninja company Spectracide. Anything that ends in -cide is usually bad news.

A game where you toss bean bags into a hole. If you do three, I think you win some shitty prize. I missed the first one and the lady shook her head in a negative fashion. I made the next two but I was still a total loser. No shitty prize for me. Gane!

But some nice lady insisted I get a free bag “to carry all the free stuff”. Now I had to carry an empty bag.

The jersey that got my attention. Not sure who player 6689 is, but he must not be very good to have a 4 digit number.

And that concludes our exciting day at the Home Despot Festival of Toilets. Be sure to flush!

Bonus! Bonus! Bonus!

When I was growing up in the magical neighborhood of Boyle Heights, Soto street was an end, a line that defined the practical limits of my universe. A block or two more to the West and you’d be crossing the river into El Centro, and unless you were on the bus with a few dollars and a reason, you just didn’t need to head in that direction. Everything you wanted to do was happening East of Soto. But if you traveled along it, Soto St was also a way to quickly get to another part of the Eastside, namely up to Brooklyn Ave and that mitote of tiendas. Or you could head south to Huntington Park for even better deals on cheap clothes. In either case, Soto connected you to where you wanted to waste your weekend.

Nowadays I’ve mostly strayed away from this defining street but I’m quite sure it still functions as a psychogeographic barrier for those in BH. I still travel its distance quite often, noting the changes, trying to remember spots I should make a point to check out. Sometimes I bring along a camera.

Cross over to see some pics of life on or near Soto!

Street corner standers, and a man with a funny hat that pushes a cart. This shot was taken a bit deep into City Terrace, a neighborhood I imagine just off Soto via Marengo. Sense of distance will vary based on familiarity.

The pedestrian unfriendly stretch of Soto, by the freeway exchange. Yet another psychogeographic barrier to the landscape, effectively segmenting the BH neighborhood. Something you’ll never see in wealthy neighborhoods.

This Saturday a bunch of food trucks are gathering in a parking lot en el centro, setting up shop, and hoping you’ll wait in line to order some of their food items. According to the website, there will be all kinds of trucks, from normal taco trucks to those fancy “mobile gourmets” that seem to be all the rage on the Westside. And it will cost you $5 just to get near these trucks. I feel obligated to share this information with you, but I certainly can’t condone it.

I feel like a dick for writing this: I hope you don’t go.

A few years ago, the food truck was merely a sustenance delivery vehicle. It either came to you on a job site or you met up with it cuz it was near work or somewhere on your way home. Because it was practical to working people, the notion of the “roach coach” persisted. Then some idiots tried to clamp down on the trucks so as to not compete with non-mobile eateries. (Capitalism hates competition.) Everyone got upset about that, and some battles for public opinion ensued. Around this time the mediocre Kogi truck and their non-vegetarian kimchi quesadilla got the attention of people that need to be told where its ok to eat, and they told others where its now okay to eat as well. A sort of consumption gossip circle.

Back on the list of acceptable goes the truck. And shit has gone downhill from there.

What once was an affordable way to get a quick and decent meal has now unnecessarily been turned into a foodie experience, with the associated price hikes and gimmicky fare. The taco truck trapped in the pinkberry mind warp. Do you remember Pinkberry? It was a frozen dessert that was mind-bogglingly popular for no good reason. Being into Pinkberry back then meant that you were in the know, that you were up on things, that you were kinda invited to a party anyone could attend. Spend a few bucks and be fleetingly part of the cool ones. But once you deposited your empty carton into the trashcan on your way out the shop door you realized the sad reality: nobody cares. Whether you liked the flavors or not, you did your part to promote a food fad. And nothing ruins a good thing like a fad.

I see all these gourmet food trucks popping up with some stupid concepts, stuff that you just know doesn’t make any sense, and I just shake my head in disgust: why were these fools blessed with rich parents instead of me? Oh well, whatever. Let them live out their dreams of notional snacks. I’ll try some of them, eventually, I’m not that much of a wet towel. But how do you rationalize a $5 entry fee to access street food? That’s the price for a meal! This event turns the logic of the mobile truck on its head by charging you for the privilege of buying their food, all while making it inconvenient to access. It just defeats the purpose. I’m not even going to ponder on the sickness of those that paid $30 for the VIP street food package, cuz that’s just revolting. In the bad way. No doubt many people will go to this “fest” as its the next thing to do, before the herd moves on to something else. This sort of outing just plasters FAD all over an otherwise good idea, makes it part of that endless drive to find the next cool. What’s wrong with food just being food?

If you really care about mobile food options, then you’ll support them when you see them around and you need a bite to eat. But encouraging this fadification of a basic human necessity is a recipe for self-destruction. This isn’t like playing with your food, its making a joke out of it.

I’m not going.

www.lastreetfoodfest.com

UPDATE!
It seems there were even better reasons not to go than the ones I came up with!

Damn! It seems like it really ruined the name of “street food”!

In charming Glassell Park! I’m just going to get this naming business out of the way and agree that its an unfortunate name for the brewery, considering its location. The owners have a reason for the name, but its kinda weak. And they say they thought about changing it, but it would have been too much red tape. That’s fair enough. But still, this should be a warning to all you would be re-namers of places: the people of Los Angeles are not so keen on such a casual re-purposing of geographical names. Seriously, take that into consideration. If I were from Glassell Park I think I’d put up a storm of protest, and with good reason. But I’m going to leave that business to others as I have enough tasks on my plate. At least it’s not as moronic as fools from Echo Park trying to claim that’s the Eastside.

Out of the way.

We found the place using math skills, cuz 3056 Roswell is on a non-descript street, and doesn’t even have a number. Not that I could tell. This be the brewery and tap room.

There was a whole pedal bike gang that beat us to the place, even though we were there a bit after 4:30 and the place only opened at 4pm. Bikers are like the new nerds. They’d taken up all the tables though most of them were on a tour of the brewing area. Luckily one of them was nice enough to clear some space for the rest of us. (Thanks Ubrayj!) They had 3 beers on tap, one of which was a Belgian Wit, a favorite style of mine. It’s traditionally a mix of barley malts, wheat, oats, cilantro seeds, and Curaçao orange peel. Their version wasn’t as tart as I like my white beers, but this was still very good.

It’s a very basic room in which to drink a beer, with a view of the brewing area. But it works.

A bit of talking and drinking was done, then time for refills. The black beer, which is their version of a mild and which they’ve titled “Solidarity”, is very roasty, almost like a porter. I think it was my favorite. The “xpa” named Revolution was interesting and tasty, though it seemed a bit flat, it could have used a few more psi’s. We asked Jeremy Raub, one of the brewers, about the inspiration for the naming theme/scheme and he said it was based on some previous design work, but also that it fit because they were trying to bring a new beer culture to the people of Los Angeles, something to overthrow the current reign of bad beer. It’s a gimmick but if ordering a beer lets you mention Solidarity, Revolution, or Manifesto, then I’m okay with it. I’ll toast to a day when these terms aren’t just beer names.

We were told a tour of the brewery was about to start, but first a requisite stop at the ceramic bushes. This urinal was placed low enough even for a 4th grader, though he might not be smart enough to get into this place.

Brewery tours tend to be geared towards the casual drinker. As a homebrewer that’s bought a few sacks of grain in my day, it’s not terribly interesting to hear the story of how a barley seed gets turned into malt although I did like how malting was described as hijacking the plant growing process. Plant pirates in pursuit of liquid pleasure.

There were a few annoying folks towards the back that kept making stupid jokes and seemed disgusted by the idea that LA water was being used to make this beer. They were the kind of people you just want to punch.

Jeremy teaching the brewing process..

..and showing an example of an active fermentation. Yeah, making beer is quite easy, it just takes a long time.

The heat exchanger. Hot wort flows one way, cold water flows the other. They exchange heat to get the wort down to a safe yeast pitching temperature.

Wyeast 1056? Why, that’s my favorite yeast as well! It’s known as the Sierra Nevada yeast, very clean and bright.

Old milk tanks turned into beer fermentors. WWVD?

Bottling machine for when they start bottling. Let me tell you, bottling sucks. It’s lots of labor for not a whole lotta love. Plus, this doesn’t even include the capping! Good luck ERB.

Will you be doing cask conditioned ales? We hope so, but his is an experiment depending on the results.

They got these casks from the San Antonio Winery in “Downtown” LA. Ugh, cringe. That winery makes a concentrated effort to be associated with Downtown, though they are instead located in fabulous Lincoln Heights. I boycott them for that very reason. They don’t need my dollars but they’ve earned my enmity. I’m telling you, changing your neighborhood name to seem more, or less, ghetto is just a bad idea. Just be honest about where you are.

By the time the brewery tour was over, a whole new crew of folks had jammed the tap room. This is going to be a popular place, with beer drinkers and fad followers alike. Until the fad dies down, expect it to be crowded. But those fools will move on to the next shiny thing and soon enough it will just be a fine watering hole for everyone.

Here’s a crappy shot of the beer taps.

On our way out, the place was much darker. We will be back.

It’s a bit late, and other people have covered it but here’s a few pics I took of the recent LA Anarchist Bookfair at beautiful Barnsdall Park. Yes, when we’re not burning and looting, we do take some time to catch up on the latest theories and practices to be found in print, its ammo to fuel the anger. Haz click para la rabia!

Under the shadow of the Hollywood sign, an invitation to Anarchy. I prefer the orange one.

Anarchist Bookfairs have a long and historic tradition. I think. In any case, for many years anarchos here in LA have been traveling north to go to the Frisco @ bookfair. It was only recently that people in Los Angeles decided to do their own and this latest one was quite well organized. Please, no stupid jokes about anarchists organizing something, cuz that’ll only show how ignorant you be. Besides, your jokes will pale.

The main point of these bookfairs? Distributing books. Or acquiring books. Or magazines. Or zines. Or pamphlets. Or flyers. And meeting up with individuals that think beyond the Democrat/Republican dichotomy.

All kinds of groups come down to showcase their latest publications. Here we see one insane member of a dialectical posse, calmly going thru his notes. Mild looking agitators put out some provocative analysis, like this here essay titled “Crisis in California.”

Fairly new, PM Press has already published quite a few items.

They have an updated edition of “Demanding the Impossible: A History of Anarchism.” Put this on your desk at work and people will leave you alone.

Before the bookfair started a group of Aztec dancers gave a blessing to the bookfair proceedings. You ain’t going to see that in SF. Los Angeles really does have a diverse @ scene that other cities might not understand.

The Catholic Worker table had this nice basket of candies that somehow made it on to the LA Times story and in their photo caption. It’s just a basket of free candies, why did they make such a big deal about it? I assume its a not-so-subtle way to make this event seem ridiculous. They also used the most hippie photo ever by which to showcase the bookfair. Of course. If I had some free time I would start covering all those shitty DNC and RNC events just for laughs as well, cuz that would be super easy. One of you radical leaning liberals should get me a pass, I will do your dirty work for you.

Strange that right next to the dumpstered candy table, Cucci set up their own table. Why not pick on their rubber wares? Or are dildos not safe enough for the LA Times public?

Here we see a full-knuckle fun toy being demonstrated as to its proper usage.

Yes, even though Anarchists are against commodity consumption, a few commemorative t-shirts were for sale. Contradictions are our stock and trade, we ain’t beyond going beyond them.

A schedule of events for the day. With enough empty space for others to fill in their own activity.

Some pro-sex publication, with a pro-reproduce this zine message. Thumbs up! And other things.

Anarcha LA had a bunch of leaflets.

And they provided childcare so parents could go check out the panels and books.

There’s some kids playing now.

Outside of the space, someone was making healthy juice from veggies.

Ala Brava Vegana were offering papa-chorizo tacos to the crowd for a suggested donation.

It was food. I’ve had better.

A crowd shot. Even though there were lots of people you could still easily get around to see all the different tables, not like the previous bookfair at the So Cal Library that was too packed to actually see any of the books.

A close up of the AK table.

Ideas in action.

Part of the interactive exhibit Actions, Conversations, Intersections. You should check it out, it runs until April.

I liked this one, I think its called “The Passage of Time” as defined by all the cassette tapes one collects.

I was helping a friend with a table and got a chance to read a few things. This nicely printed zine had a pretty silly argument against phones. It was worth a few laughs.

There was another food booth with much better eats but I forgot to take a pic of my quesadillas. Here we see the plate of one attendee neatly organized to look like a circle A. Its all about aesthetics.

Hmm, whats this? Is that a beer? Oh yeah! The Gallery Theatre has a small concession stand including a few decent beers (like this Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) at $5, not bad at all.

It was a great way to relax while listening to a panel that included discussions on the takeover of factories in Argentina, Greek riots, Korean labor strikes, and the current occupation movement in the universities. You know, the usual Sunday afternoon chat session.

Who knew revolt could be so civilized? And refreshing!

There were lots of booths I kept meaning to revisit for a pic, like the fine wares at Little Black Cart, but somehow I got stuck “helping” way longer than anticipated. Oh well, mutual aid and all that. Over all, a very well run event, at a perfect location, and certainly one to top. See ya’ next year!

Check out www.laanarchist.org to keep up to date on the latest @ events in LA.

You know what I hate about vegetarian/vegan restaurants? They’re expensive. For some stupid reason, the fact that you want a meatless option triggers a gouging response where they are allowed to shake you down for extra change. Yeah, maybe its a specialty, but it ain’t that special anymore. I’ll get into that some other time, I’m not here to fix this issue at the moment. Instead I want to point you towards a place that takes a different approach, providing delicious veggie food at reasonable prices. And as you’ll soon see, sometimes incredibly reasonable prices! Click ahead if you want to see why I think you should take a lunch break over in the charming city of Rosemead.

Many know about the Happy Family restaurant in Monterey Park, it has 119 reviews for a score of 4 stars over on yelp. Yet this sister restaurant is less known, despite the fact that its much better, with a total of 2 reviews and just 2 stars on yelp. Which just goes to show that people on yelp are sheep.

We ordered the lunch special (11:30-2:30), which included some sort of melon soup. I’d prefer hot and sour, but this is good.

One dish they always do better: mustard greens with tofu sheets. Look how green it is, it has to be good for you no?

And then we cast aside those considerations by choosing the fried vs steamed bread.

Vegetarian Sweet and Sour Pork, made with wheat gluten puffs. I know, this isn’t a very creative choice, but it’s what I was craving, ok? Happy Family uses a variety of analogues and its a good idea to try a few of them to see which you do/don’t like. As for me, I don’t particularly care for the mushroom “house chicken” that many seem to like. That’s okay though, we have options!

What’s this? A third dish for a two person lunch? Yup! And that’s the reason for this post, to let you all know that New Happy Family has a 3-for-the-price-of-2 special. Great for trying out a new dish, or to pretend to “treat” a friend, or if you just want to save some extras for next day’s lunch. You can’t eat Tina’s frozen burritos everyday at work. Err, or at least you shouldn’t. The savory dish above is known as home style tofu, one of my favorites.

The total for this grand meal? Just $11.60! I can think of lots of places where that wouldn’t even cover a measly meal for one. And did I mention you also get hot tea? And rice? Now that’s the kind of pricing that makes sense in these desperate times.

Give it a try, how can you go wrong?

If you’ve driven up the Pasadena Freeway lately you may have noticed these cats hanging around the asphalt, smiling stupidly as you speed by. And before you know it, yer smiling stupidly as well when you spot the next one, peeking out behind that bush or on the other side of the bridge. Cheap thrills. A tiny visual break from the regular dose of mundane. It’s similar to Leo Limon’s River Catz, though I guess these would be Arroyo Gatos. I was able to snap a few pics from a moving vehicle, click ahead to check out a few of the others.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this is graffiti. Terrible, terrible, vandalistic graffiti.

Look at all that adorable law breaking!

Awwwwwwww! Que cute! I love vandalism! I mean cats, yeah, cats.

Hooray! We spot one more gatita at play!

Ok, this one has gone too far. That cat is obviously stoned, and that’s illegal and cannot be condoned. Unless it has a special medical card. Which is really just a legal loophole for buying pot anyways. But is that legal for cats? And wait just a minute, isn’t grafitto still illegal? How can vandalism be so cute? Maybe we should just legalize graffiti, but that would be really bad for graffiti. Hmm, this is getting complicated. Nevermind, here comes the next kitty…

Every once in awhile I get a personal email by some reporter or “film maker” that wants me to go in front of their cameras for a soundbite. Or a punchline as the case may be.
Every once in awhile I get a personal email by some reporter or “film maker” that wants me to go in front of their cameras for a soundbite. Or a punchline as the case may be. Neh pollos, not interested. I don’t want your camera to steal what’s left of my soul. Besides, I’ve got less important things to do.

And then sometimes we get requests sent to LA Eastside regarding questions, comments, or to participate in this or that. You wouldn’t believe how many requests of these sorts this lil’ site gets, to cover some event, to mention some product. I usually send it to the intended author or forward it to our internal email list, see if anyone is interested in helping out. But this video up above is the reason I tend to NOT want to help reporters in their search for content.

Check out this documentary by Kyle Wegner, a short video clip that aims to deal with the false “debate” regarding the location of the Eastside. Its not very enlightening but I don’t think I’m the intended consumer for this sort of stuff. Nevermind the content, here’s why this video sucks:

1. LA Eastside didn’t “refuse” to participate. There’s a difference between refusal and a lack of interest. Nor did it help that you gave us about a week notice for your “tight shooting schedule”. Come on now, some of us have to work. Besides, ever since youtube the opportunity to be in front of a video camera is just not that tempting. BTW, did Patt Morrison also refuse to participate?

2. The email they attribute to LA Eastside is from me, EL CHAVO!, and nobody else. If you take a look over there on your right you’ll see a list of our contributors to this group blog.

3. Uhh, yeah, thanks for using my initial personal email to you as the group position for this site. Without asking. Why am I not surprised? For the record, here’s the rest of it in context.

> I think I might be able to get one or two of our authors to contribute, but
> I have to admit I'm very wary of your intentions. I'm not sure who you are
> or what your aim is. Would you care to send us a bit more info?
> The only person that thinks the definition of the Eastside is a "touchy and
> heated topic" is Jesus Sanchez, and that's because he knows he is wrong. But
> he doesn't care. The term has had a meaning for way longer than when all the
> newbies started to move into areas closer to downtown, escaping their
> parents suburbs I assume. But just because they try to rename an area to fit
> the perspective of their geographical base, doesn't mean the term is up for
> grabs.
>
> If you send me some honest info about your intentions, then I will make an
> honest attempt at getting some of our authors to participate.
>
> Saludos, EL CHAVO!

4. Do some fucking legwork. We aren’t the only people upset at this casual dismissal of our place on the map, just the most easily google-able. You could have at the very least searched through our published posts for some proper quotes to use.

5. You use at least 3 of our photos, my email, and the video that I shot of Dewey, and you still can’t even put a link to our site? That’s messed up.

This is why I don’t talk to “reporters”.
