  1. years ago, when i made an attempt to interview some of the artists that got my attention, magu’s name kept coming up. now, my myopic artistic tendencies lean to that street stuff (do i have to write aesthetic? nyet) of willie herron or john valadez, but still i kept hearing that name. it is a cool name. i used to wonder what a magu looked like, but i knew his art would look different. and it is different. and it will always be different. you or i don’t have to be artists or critics to get any of that stuff, but what i did appreciate is that when you saw his stuff, you knew it was his. i guess when you gain an identity, you’ve gained some level of success. i remember him saying he wanted everything he worked on to have some humanity, even the awesome stuff he did on cars. i guess from the vast amount of endearing comments i’ve seen elsewhere, he achieved some of that. good for him.
