East LA on This American Life

Last year, there was an excellent episode of This American Life themed “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

The last segment of the show was about a pre-med student at UCLA from East LA who is undocumented.

I was wondering if anyone listened to it, possibly knows this person, and if so what her situation is like now.

  1. I think I did hear this, but I think it was a couple of years ago. Not sure if it’s the same one. Heard it on an AM station driving from Modesto to Sacramento. But this one was about a girl, undocumented, attending UCLA. She talked about living, literally, inside of a storage room on campus or something like that. I think she was kicked out when they found out she was undocumented, and the point of the show was to protest it. I’ll never forget one thing she said, and this stuck with me. And, I paraphrase here…”I’m not the type of person who wants power, to boss people around. I’m the type of person who wants people to respect me.” She talked in a very broken English accent. She was such a noble and determined person. I hope she wound up getting her degree. I don’t know if this is the same person you’re talking about or what but I know this girl was undocumented and attending UCLA.
