Action Against Loft Auction

Browne of The Bus Bench (and LA Eastside contributor) took to the streets to interject some political theatre into the auction of some pricey downtown lofts. With a sign that reads “Will Work For Loft” and  “Brother, Can Ya $pare A Loft?” handouts with information on the homeless, it’s the kind of necessary action I wish would be much more common nowadays. Channel 7 news covered the auction because they thought the use of the internet for auctions was interesting. Really.

Head over to Browne’s post for her write up of the event.

  1. Wow, that ladies jacket really says something. Nothing says artiste like using a pajama top you bought in Chinatown as outerwear. I bet her “work” is real interesting.

But for serious, they start at 195k and the smallest is 55 sq ft.?? That’s fucking crazy. My garden shed is bigger than that and it even has a vintage window and mini loft. It’s quite a haul to get a latte and a trip to a gallery but if anyone is interested, I’ll make ya a deal.

Bravo to Browne. And El Chavo, you’ll have a chance for this kind of action if the bankruptcy judge ever approves an auction sale of those units in that building by the Goodwill and St. Vincent de Pauls with the El Torito paint job and the spaceship shat onto the roof.

  2. This is nothing – you guys should show up at the title company’s office when the deals go through!

    That would take some dedication.

  3. Pitbullgirl,

That outfit is actually a thrown away (or saved) mattress turned into a kimono by Edith Abeyta. I wore it when I was a walking alter for her in a Tropico de Nopal’s Calavera Fashion Show and I thought it was so freakin cute, but yet political that I forced her to give it to me for future subversive projects such as this one. Of course I have dozens of beautiful vintage dresses to choose from in my closet when I need to do some political action, but a mattress turned into a kimono just says so much more.

I always say that when I wear the outfit, because people never realize it’s a mattress.

  4. Browne,

I wasn’t talking about your outfit but the jacket of the ponytailed lady seen in the video (and on that screenshot above). I’m assuming she’s an artist because I’ve seen that look rocked by many a high school art teacher and she’s going to buy a loft and everyone knows that only artists live in lofts. Hahaha.

I’m amazed that Edie made your kimono from a trashed mattress. It doesn’t look like it came from a mattress at all, it looks like some expensive quilted fabric.

  5. I realized that right even before I saw your response…but I got to plug Edie, so it’s a good thing.

Hey I am paritial to the art teacher eclectic casual look. It’s sexy, ecclectic and it says “I’m hip, but I’m not going to wear skinny jeans because one they are so last year and two I’m not 12 and I’m completely ok with that.”

And I have to admit to rocking that look myself.

I may have to change my walking in the city outfit. Currenly I have an obsession with jumpsuits. It’s a little insane. I go to thrift stores and buy up all of the jumpsuits, because I think it will help me get ready quicker and be more efficient (but when you have to go the bathroom it all goes down hill…)

I was wearing a jumpsuit under that mattress. It’s black with black sequins that are in the shape of rice.

Yeah but cute top of the world and some loose bottom may be my new look, but I don’t know how that will look with heels and I like the option of wearing high heels.

That being said, that was pretty funny pitbullgirl, but you’ll have to stay after class for that one.

  6. Does anyone know if they actually managed to sell any of the lofts? I can’t imagine who would buy one even at $195K.

ETA: Blogdowntown says they sold 62. That amazes me.

  7. And some of those spaces are TINY like a bit over 500 square feet. And they started the bids at 195k?

Yeah I get the, “In NY, blah, blah, blah,” but this is not New York and there are plenty of places you can live in a studio for less than 200k, plus HOA fees…

400 dollar a foot, they are insane and greedy assholes, but they can only be as greedy as the amount of suckers out there willing to buy for an inflated price.

I get the whole investment, but to me 500 square feet in LA is not a good investment, people out here love space. And they should really stop calling 500 square feet studios lofts, they are so killing it with that term.
